Engine Balance, 50 or 28 oz ??
Is there an easy / reliable method to determine which crankshaft balance factor is used on a given engine, a 351W / 392 in this case. I've seen 164 tooth flywheels in both 28 and 50 oz. configurations.

If I am not mistaken all 351Windsors are 28oz while non HO 302's are 28oz and HO 302's are 50oz. Look at your harmonic balancer to see if it is stamped for the ounces.

All the small block Fords were 28oz until 1981. The 302 changed to 50 oz. All 351's are 28oz. You may also want to check and make sure that a 164 tooth flywheel will work with your bellhousing. Almost all cars used the 157 tooth (Mustang GT) flywheel. The aluminum bellhousings will only accept the 157.

If you are building a 393 stroker, I would go with the 28oz. balance,but if you are using a Scat crank you still have to have your rotating assy. balanced as the Scat crank IS NOT balanced from the manufacterer.. David |
My 351 Windsor is a 50 oz. I recently purchased a new flywheel for it.

Thanks for the information. I do indeed have a Scat crank (cast steel they call it). No problem balancing it, I have my own balancer. However after reading the above perhaps I should be thinking farther ahead. What type of trans, what bell housing, and finally, what flywheel. At this time I am strongly considering an aluminium flywheel. What bell housings / transmissions are most of you using?

Wow..... some of us are happy just to have a good set of wrenches :D :D :D You must have a mechine shop in your garage! What other mechines are standing on the floor? Do you take in work from poor soles like me on a small build budget? :D :D :D |

Perhaps I overstated "my" capabilities a bit. I am the automotive tech instructor for our engineering students and as such have access (a more accurate characterization) to many machines (901 Superflow dyno and flow bench, etc.), and other testing insturments. The information I lack is/are the specifics for Ford performance. I've always worked primarily with Chevy stuff is the past. Bill |
