427 Sideoiler

I am relatively new to this forum but would like an answer to a question that may seem that of a novice. What constitutes a 427 sideoiler? What is the difference between a sideoiler andf the other 427's?

My SPF 1649 is coming within next two weeks and I ordered a 351W/427 stroker small block but was curious as to what really makes a 427 sideoiler big block. Any help appreciated.

The short story is centeroilers were made first and then sideoiler came out, the sideoiler is a better oiling system. Hope this helps. Mike

Juan one,

side oiler had a casting bump that ran along the side of the block that was drilled to give the crank priority oiling instead of the cam for severe race conditions,.....not really more than prestige to most of us.

427 sideoiler

Karl thanks for the explanation. Why are they so darn expensive? Are they that much better than a 427 stroker like the one is being built for me? Other than the weight difference why would someone wish to have such a big block on the street for cruising mainly? Prestige as you mentioned?

That is a much bigger can of #$^% than you really wanna open, I'll just leave it at prestige :D

427bb vs. 427sb stroker

Karl:

Point well taken. I do not wish to be in the middle of such a debate either.

"What makes the sideoiler so expensive"?

I would venture a guess and say its purely supply and demand.

Its a 40 year old engine and there weren't many made in the first place.

Even Shelby himself couldn't get his hands on enough of them to the point he started to go with the more streetable 428 FE

They are very pricy puppies. If a true purist must have one, then I guess it becomes seller's market. As I said they are scarce enough to force the market very high for the quality engines and parts.

Plus if you take a engine like a 427 engine rated at say 400hp stock, to a small block that work up to 400hp what do you think is going to last longer?
