jag rear/toploader fluid levels
I am close to putting new buld on the road...how much and how do you determine fluid levels for gear oil in Jag independent rear and tranny fluid for 4 speed toploader...both are currently dry...THANKS

Jag rear - there should be two plugs in the diff, one on the bottom, (for draining) and one in the rear cover. Fill until it dribbles out of the rear cover plughole. Level the car for this.

What Wilf said, plus for the Jag rear if it's posi you'll need a couple of bottles of GM posi fluid in addition to the gear lube. Tom |
Fill'em both till it runs out and your done.
As for the friction modifier, I've heard don't and do?. The supplier for my jag rear parts said don't, so I didn't, figured he knows best. |

What are the particulars concerning the Jag rear-end and suspension? What are the key points to look for regarding lubrication and frequency of checking? Any info from anyone would be appreciated.... al |
Al - I grease all the wishbone pivot bearings twice a year, ditto halfshaft UJs. Top up grease in wheel bearings once a year.
My car sees about 4000 miles a year, so I guess this is overkill, but so is everything else I do on my cobra. The way I drive it, it is cheap insurance. Rear end oil I change every year, ditto gearbox. One good thing to rememember when building up a jag rear end is to use the correct (angled) grease nipples on the outboard UJs - and angle them towards the car centreline - you can't get on the straight ones once they are buried in the hub carriers. Once a year or more I check for play in all the elements of the rear end - wishbone pivots, UJs, hub/driveshaft splines - I found that it is almost impossible to get all the play out of a jag rear end, but now that I have a baseline..... hth |
