Relay info needed !!!
Trying to find relays for the horn and fan.
On the fan, I want to use a three position switch, off/direct/temp sender Will leave switch on temp sender side, but can manually over ride if needed. What part number/mfg relay should I use??? The other is for the horn. Would prefer the old style instead of the little black Bosch relays. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Bill Cook :D |

Fan relay should be rated at least 30 Amps. Horn relay usually rated the same. Both relays are normally S.P.S.T, or Single Pole Single Throw, meaning they operate like a normal on/off switch, turning voltage on or off. For the fan, I would wire the fan relay to turn on by the thermostat or the switch, but wired so the switch cannot turn the relay off. I cannot think of a reason to over ride the thermostat and turn the fan "OFF". Too much risk of forgetting to turn it on until the engine overheats. If you're worried about not being able to turn off the fan in the event of thermostat failure, then make the fuse more visable, and use that to cut power to the fan. Both of these relays are available at most auto stores like autozone, trac auto, pep boys...... nothing special needed here. Just pick out a 30 Amp SPST, 12 volt dc coil, in a style that suits your fancy:D - Jim - |

they work great for both applications and they look perfectly original! also - why in the world would you forget to turn on the fan? |

Only wire the switch to overide the fan operation. Wire the fan direct through the relay (not through the switch) so it will always come on if temp is reached when key is on. Switch would then be used only to ground circut and switch fan on regardless of engine temprature. This is assuming circuit is hot only when key is on, otherwise battery could be discharged with key in off position. ........Rick |
