Emergency Brake
Hey Guys,
How well does your emergency brake work? Mine will not hold the car on even the slightest incline. This is a real pain in the butt for many a scenerio, but mainly not being able to keep the car running in my driveway(slight incline) without sitting in it with my foot on the brake. Any suggestions on fixing the problem? Is there an adjustment to be had? |
It would help if you mentioned what type of brakes are on the rear of your car, along with other pertinant details, such as "E-brake lever never has any resistance when pulled" To help your new friends here at CC diagnose your cobra's little problems, list the make and engine under your user name.

Absent providing more info. as Mr. Fixit has suggested, I would suggest a brick under the wheel.:D

Did not mean to be so vague.
It is an EM with drum brakes in rear and discs in front 3.25 Curry rear end with Compmotive knock offs. The lever pulls up with the same amount of resistance that most any other brake lever has...not too easy , not too hard. When in use it provides enough resistance to keep someone from manually pushing it on level ground but on anything but level ground and it starts rolling. |
Unfortunatley, most cobra's don't have very good parking brakes either. The original style lever doesn't have much travel, and it wastes some of that travel giving it up to a high mechanical advantage. You can lessen the amount of leverage the handle has, so the pull is harder, but gets more action at the cable. I would check that the cable is properly adjusted, no slack at rest and the cables that go to the drums are properly seated. There is no room for slack. Make sure the rear drum brakes are adjusted properly, sometimes the auto adjusters don't adjust automatically as the shoes wear.
