Tach hook up MSD with Smith Tach
Hey everyone,
I have a Kirkham that has a MSD ignition. How do you hook up the Smith tach? Thanks, Tom Lucas:JEKYLHYDE |
Tom:
There is an MSD adaptor that is usually furnished with the tach, and you need it to do the install. It is a small unit that mounts under your dash. Your tach has three male spade connections, input, output and ground....the adaptor has four - input, output, ignition and ground The MSD module has a recessed spade connector on its side that runs a single wire to the adaptor. Installation is very straightforward, and if you have purchased the Smiths MSD adaptor, the instructions that come with it are very clear. Bud:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE |
It depends, there are two different styles of Smiths tachs I have seen in cobras. One needs the MSD tach adapter, as well as a large discoidal capacitor inline with the tach signal wire. The other type works fine just connecting the tach output lead from the 6AL directly to the tach. Try hooking it up from the tach output on the 6AL directly tothe tach, just you would with any tach. If that doesn't work, get the capacitor free from MSD. If those two don't do it, get the $30 tach adapter box from MSD. Or just call MSD's tech support and deal with them. The second type of Smith's tach referred to here has a single multi-wire connector, the first type has a couple of single wire connectors.
