Carb ID

Hoping someone can help ID my Holley carb. My understanding is that it's a 650, but I can't find any markings on it.

Any opinions around the Holley Avenger 670 series carbs, from a setup and tuning standpoint?

John

Looks like a 4160 series find the "list" # stamped into the back of the air horn (rear upper carb opening) post that and we can tell you exactly what it is,

Looks like a #1850, 600 cfm that I had many many moons ago.

And why is it mounted backwards?????

KK,

Thanks for the advice, I had looked all around the body, but hadn't checked the back of the air horn. Number is 9834-1 which cross references to a 4160 (600 cfm) on the Holley site.

Not sure if I follow your comment around the carb being mounted backwards. Throttle linkage is on the drivers side, which seems to be common on the solid linkage setups for single carbs. I've seen where the dual quads have the throttle linkage on the drivers side, but the carbs are mounted where the linkage connecting the two carbs is on the passenger side (like your setup).

Since you were able to id the carb right away, any thoughts around this series carb from a tuning standpoint versus current/newer models? Thanks again for your help.

John,

I really dont dont count myself among the carburation guru's on this board, but In my opinion the 4160 is a great all around carb., the vacuum secondaries keep it performing optimum for conditions and it is very tunable and reliable ( I think the basic design has been around for 25 - 30 years) might be one of the most widely used hot rod carbs, I must admit I think 600 cfm could be a tad light for an agressively built 351 though.

most ford/ holley combinations run with the air horn rearwards regardless of throttle linkage.

good luck, KK

KK,

I keep thinking the same thing, that the carb is somewhat undersized, however my 351 is relatively calm. I've reviewed a number of web sites which calc carb sizing and spoke to the Holley tech group, and all indicated that 600 is a good match.

Also, same feedback from Holley, good all around carb that was discontinued only because of model consolidation. The car runs well, but I do get a detonation in the header/side pipes when run hard and I come of the gas quickly (running too rich?). Will look to do a general rebuild and replacement of the power valve and then possibly re-jetting the unit. I agree that it seems like the air horn should be towards the rear, but doesn't seem to be an option, unless I'm missing something. Holley indicated that it wouldn't make a big difference in performance.

Thanks again,
