ram tubes

tonight i changed my idle jets to 55's and i left the ram tubes off with no air cleaners and it fixed my flat spot between 1500-2500 and the surging while cruising around the same rpm)
how does that change the performance of the engine?
when i was driving it seemed to hesitate a little(nothing like the flat spot with my old 50 idles, bloody hard to explain  ) on medium to hard throttle when in 2nd or third gear???????
am i loosing it or what????????
