The transmission in question....
http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp

This is a reply to a similar question from another forum:

I work for a G-Force distributor. It is hands down the baddest transmission available right now. It is 38 pounds lighter than a TKO. We have done major testing with it and have gone as fast as 9.70 at 137 MPH with it.

This transmission is also fully capable of being driven on the street. I myself have driven them with no upshifting or downshifting problems. The only set back is it is a little noisy due to the Straight Cut Gear set.

Contact me directly at NITROSTANGRACING@MSN.COM for more info.

Thanks Jeff

It might sound naive, but I really do believe that any products that G-Force put to market will have been thoroughly tested prior to public sale. Their reputation is too good to risk with some half baked, street compromised product. I'd go for the straight-cut gears because of the extra strength, but I bet their helical gears would will still be stronger than any other "street" trans on the market.

Do you think I respect G-Force??? :3DSMILE:

Craig,
I checked the G-Force site the other night as yet i haven't phoned.......Straight Cut hey Craig does that mean you were looking at the dog box or the Synch ???It appears to be well tested through people in the industry...Drags and circut, definitely out of left field just as i get set BAM ,"HEY WHAT ABOUT THIS PAUL" but i guess it's money in my pocket at that price!!!!!!
I'll certainly consider it ......Paul:confused:

Very interesting. Just what I have been looking for. I just checked out their website and spoke to them on the phone. A GForce T5 with synchros ready to bolt in is only $1950. I'm looking at tranny upgrade options right now and this looks like a good one.

750hp 06-19-2003 07:17 AM

If I were to ever put a manual trans behind this motor, I would definitely only use a dog box. Clutchless full throttle shifting appeals to me **) That's the idea anyway, I like the way a dog box can be shifted so quickly as to not upset the chassis dynamics anywhere near as much as a synchro trans.

The GF5R G-Force 5sp dog box is apparently remarkably quiet, considering it's no compromise racing heritage. I wonder how the T5 would sound???

OZCOBRA 06-19-2003 07:36 AM

Clutchless full throttle shifting UMMMMMM!!:p It almost sound sexual....%/
Craig , Quite a substantial wieght saving of 35lb's over the TKO style/sized box..Sorry GEAR NOISE, i can't hear you go outside an turn your car off..!!!! lol

Buzz..was that $US1950 change over or outright...

.P.S Great work on those concept cars buddy they were terrific and i'm sure everybody enjoyed them as much as i did..!!

Regards Paul

Craig, other than the noise (which is hardly an issue in a Cobra) what are the issues with using a dog box on the street? Are there problems with shifting/downshifting at normal speeds?
Paul that was the outright price. The upgrade kit for an existing T5 box is only US$950. Unfortunately for me it only fits a WC box and mine is a NWC - amazing that it's lasted this long.
The concept cars are still a work in progress. I just haven't had time lately to play with them. I'm really enjoying the exercise myself.

OZCOBRA 06-19-2003 07:53 AM

Forgive my lack of technical knowledge.Dumb question WC/NWC???
Paul

Buzz 06-19-2003 08:04 AM

WC stands for "world class" which is the name given to T5 boxes after a factory upgrade with stronger bearings and internals for higher torque handling. NWC is "non world class" and describes all the sorry buggers before the upgrade.

750hp 06-20-2003 04:08 AM

Buzz,
I didn't realise that the upgrade was only for the WC trans. Was that on their website somewhere? It would be a shame, because there are any number of broken NWC T5s around the world....

Not having synchros means that you have to match the rpm of the engine to the gear that you are about to engage. This means little when you are accelerating because most guys would simply lift off the gas pedal for a split second and just pull the shifter into the next gear. No clutch disengagement at all!!! Set up an aftermarket Engine Management System to retard the timing when it detects pressure on the shifter, and you don't even have to lift off the gas. How good would that be ?!?! **)

Downshifting requires a little blip of the throttle to keep the rpm matched to the lower gear ratio. Many guys are in the habit of "heel and toeing" because it's easier on the trans, and it makes for smoother driving in any case.

David Salkowski (here on ClubCobra) was the guy that convinced me that it was worth giving Mike Long of G-Force a phone call a while back. David's immaculate ERA - that's running nearly 9sec 1/4 mile times naturally aspirated  - has a GF5R trans. He says that the dog engagement is absolutely no big deal, and you get used to it straight away. In fact, he says that many passengers don't even realise that there's a racing trans in the car.

OZCOBRA 06-20-2003 05:36 AM

Craig,
What in the way of clucth set-ups would David have been running...any thoughts on a setup..?? this area is not me so excuse my ignorance!!!What denotes the WC and NWC Trans ???

750hp 06-20-2003 06:14 AM

Paul, other than the T5 that I broke in my last Cobra, I also don't have much personal experience with high perf manual trans cars. The factory T5s over here were the plain Jane versions. I honestly don't know how to tell the difference between the two without lining them up side by side. I can tell you a bit about 1000+hp capable Powerglides though....

David was/is using a McLeod Dual Disk Street Twin clutch assembly. Bit of a mouthful, but apparently a really strong setup. For a lot less money, you could get someone like Denis at Direct Clutch up here in Brisbane to build you something light and bulletproof. http://www.carscene.com.au/outlets/direct/index.htm

Buzz 06-20-2003 06:56 AM

Hi guys. I got the info about the GF T5 over the phone. I was hoping I would be able to send them my box for an upgrade rebuild or just order the kit and have it done down here. Here's a link to some info on the T5:
