COULD NOT FIND ANY GM SYNCHROMESH. BUT I DID FIND SOME AMS ATF WILL THIS BE GOOD ENOUGH?:confused: ANY INPUT FROM ANYONE WOULD HELP.

Synchromesh all the way. Pennzoil makes it now, so you can sometimes find it in parts stores. Otherwise, it's a GM dealer item only.

I've used Royal Purple synthetic, I've been told it very good stuff!
The car/trans works great. We went on a 300 mile drive last weekend and the owner loves his Tremic, upgraded from a T-5.
My T-5 still works good.

I had Redline MTL in my Tremec for 18,000 miles with no problems,just change fluid this weekend and put the GM Synchromesh,can not tell any difference in shifting or anything else for that matter....GM stuff is avaliable at any GM dealer,Redline can be found in Summit/Jegs or most high performance parts stores....

As Wade mentioned Pennzoil makes a synchro oil.It says on the bottle that it is suitable for the same applications as the GM.I've been using it in my 3550 for about 2000 miles so far. The good thing is that it's available at auto supply stores (open Sundays).If anyone knows of any problems with it please respond.I ran the GM before adding the Pennzoil.Thanks, Pete.

If the tranny is new I would suggest using regular $3/bottle ATF during break-in to wash all the assembly lube off the internals. After the first 500 or so miles, (once the clutch is broken is as well) drain the ATF and pour in the Syncromesh or equivalent.

I second Mike's advice. That's exactly what I did... 500 easy miles w/ ATF for break-in, then switch to synchromesh. There are a lot of notchy Tremecs out there, but mine shifts smooth as butter... just as good as my old T5.

Ok, I'm confused now guys.. I have a 3550-2 behind mine and it's brand new, well I did put 2100 miles on it since picking up the car in april. You are now saying I should have drained and changed the tranny fluid at 500 miles just like the engine oil. Is this something particular to 3550's cause I've owned alot of cars in my day some hot some not and I've never changed tranny fluid at 500 miles. Since when is there going to be stuff floating around in a trans that we need to flush out so soon? If I'm looking a tranny failure in the near future cause I didn't do this please let me know.. after what I've been through with the engine that's all I need to make my week!!!:confused:

It's not necessary but just a suggestion from most of the tremec dealers, as the assembly lube and any foreign debris is washed off by the ATF and forms a messy slurry. Does it lubricate any better/worse than straight Syncromesh? I don't know. It's similar to running a new engine for the first time. It sure can't hurt. But I can't say you'll notice any benefit either :).

Thanks, I was a bit worried there and thought I'd messed up somehow.. like I said after the fiasco I've been through with the engine if I had forgotten to do something with the tranny and was looking at trouble soon from that I think I'd just go out back and shoot myself. I may change it anyway when I get the car back just for safety sake.. like you said may not benefit but can't hurt either.
