Fuel log construction
I'm constructing a fuel log from aluminum pipe and some AN fittings.
I would like to know if there are any baffels or screens etc. inside the fuel logs that are factory produced?
Somebody might have opened one and could tell me what is inside.
Thanks. Rod

Nope. I make them all the time. The idea is a buffer between the pump/filter and the Carb. I usually use 1/4 or 1/8 wall 1.25 OD aluminum and tap the ends for 3/8 or 1/2 NPT. Then you can use whatever adapter you need.

What is the purpose of this "buffer"?

There are several reasons for using the fuel log. One is if you are using a mechanical fuel pump, the log (reservoir) will soften the impulses from the pump. Another is that an aluminum log that is large enough will cool the fuel if it is placed correctly and give the carb a cooler supply of fuel. Yet another is that with a log you are putting a steady reservoir of fuel right net to the carb and for lack of a better term “inlarging” the carb bowl. This however is open to debate.

Thanx
Thanx Renegade, that clears up some unknowns.
Do you have any photos of your fuel logs?

No not at this time. It's pretty simple stuff though. I have had good luck hanging them right off the side of the carb on the fuel inlet side. Usually a little up and away from manifold heat. Use a homemade bracket and the carb mounting studs or machine right into the side of the log and run hard line up to the Holley. You will need cathedral bowls for this but if you do it that way you can run the feed line right into the end and let the log hang from the hard line.

Just a note. On Weber systems the fuel log is no longer used. Enzo Alibrandi who own Finishline, and is a Weber expert in his own right, has never recommended them for Weber units. Something to do with differential pressure with varying fuel line lengths going to the four carbs.
At vintage races, the original Comp cars often show the log but disconnected with a single line winding around the four carb system.
