Hall effect sensor on speedo
No, I don't mean a dongle to sense a draft when wearing only our skivies.
About once a year I have to disconnect the hall effect sensor from the speedometer because the guage will start reading 50 or 60 mph when I turn the key on. Anyone know whay this happens. I have head of dealers having to reset these on some cars also. It was a pain at first, but I have quick disconnects up under the dash so now it is just annoying. BTW: VDO guages. |

Does your speedometer do this all the time or only occasionaly? Mine does this each time I turn the ignition on. It settles out quickly. Looks as if it is doing a diagnostic test or something. Mine is VDO also. Hog |
Mine does it afer working fine for several months. It will stay at 50mph until I unplug and replug. Of course it freaks passengers out when the see it reading 50 or 60 mph fast on the interstate.

Mine just does it when turning on the ignition then it settles out. Seems strange it is intermittent and unplugging the transmitter (hall effect) clears it up for a time. Sometines I have found when having strange problems it will end up being a poor ground somewhere. I am using a Ford sending unit. The VDO would not fit into my Tremec transmission. I'd bet Hog is right. Check for loose grounds. The VDO will normally do a "self diagnosis" every time the key is turned on.
Can't put enough emphasis on "grounds", especially in a fiberglass car that will built up huge charges of static electricity! DV |
Easy enough to do the grounds again. I'd say I'll let you know, but since it takes several months, no one will remember.

I have used the VDO Electronic Speedometer and Hall Effect Sensor since 1998 and have never had any problem at all with it. When I first turn my key on, I wait a few seconds until the speedometer completes it's diagnostics and then it will sweep the needle all the way across and back to zero. But it has never read anything except zero unless I am moving. Ron :) |
Funny, I never had a problem until I moved here to CA. Wonder if it has to do with the current governer.
Ron, mine is from '95, maybe yours hasn't had time to go all goofy. Actually, I think it is a bad ground/connection issue. It has never swept across the guage that I recall, except when it acts up like this. Tonights project: re-do all the connections on the speedo. Do you know if VDO makes a mechanical temp guage, black face/white numbers? Anyway, got to get it fixed, my daughter has been pestering for a ride again. The neighbors laugh, but she enjoys it. |

Does your speedometer have a chip that you just drive a mile and it will automatically calibrate the speedometer when you change gears or tire sizes ? Mine does and that is why I like it. As for the gauges, I have the whole set and mine are mechahnical oil and temp gauge with black faces and white numbers. But I heard a friend of mine who was looking for one say that they no longer make this set. He also had weird troubles with his speedometer and we took the leads from the Hall Effect Sensor off and traced them all the way to the speedometer. We found a very small bare spot in his sending lead and it was rubbing on a piece of metal. We fixed that and he has never had another problem. You might check with NAPA as our NAPA store had a few of the older VDO gauges still in stock a few months ago. They seem to have gone to the more modern look now. Ron **) %/ |
Mine has dip switches in the back. You drive 10 miles with them set to zero, see how many miles it thinks you went and look at a chart to set the switches.
