Lucas Ignition Switch
I purchased a Lucas ignition switch from Finish Line (part number S-IG). I asked for a wiring diagram and was told just use a multimeter. The switch has three positions on the back, 1 has a single blade
both 2 and 3 have two blades each. Anyone have a wiring diagram and how do you ground the switch, I have a fiberglass dash board. |
All ignition switches operate about the same. I have a Lucas switch, but used a Ford F150 pickup key switch instead.
First, you don't ground the switch, it's a power feed only. On the back of the switch should be a battery power in, accessories, ignition, and start. Turn the key to the left for accesswories only, key to the right is ignition. Both accessories and ignition should be hot. Twist the key to the right is start. Ignition will be hot, start will be hot, and accessories will be off. Using a multimeter, figure out which is which. Accessories is anything you want turned on and off by the ignition switch, but off in start. Your radio, for instance. Ignition is just that. Goes to your ignition power. Start is just that. Goes to your starter solenoid. Keep all your desired safety devices, trans in neutral, connected in series. This help? |
You don't need a ground to it...All you need is to know what accessories you want on what position. Of course your main hot wire will go to one post....your accessories that you want on when the key is in the "on" position, and your starter will go on the other post. To find out which is which, orient your switch so that you know which side the off position is...then just put a lead from a continuity tester on that post....turn the key to the "on" position, then touch your other lead to the other posts to see which one it is....it's really simple. The accessories that will be turned on by this switch will have their own ground...you don't need a ground to the switch itself. Its only purpose it to supply juice to wherever you want it.
