Which Carb!!!! Help Quick!
I'm running a 302, with a Ford Performer Dual Plane 289/302 Intake manifold, a B303 cam, and Edelbrock aluminum heads...I have my parts guy telling me to go 600 cfm, and my speed shop guy telling me 650 cfm...i need to order this TONIGHT...any help???

600 is plenty big for a 302. Get a Holley. If you think you will run an automatic tranny, be sure to get the ford kickdown lever on the carb. Also, get a pair of 65 jets to start with the 72's will be too big.

I have pretty much the same set-up. Different cam and different heads, but the same Performer on the same 302. I have a 650 Holley, mechanical secondaries and mechanical choke and it seems to be just what the doctor ordered  :p

Ride,
If you want more power and your willing to pay a little more and play around to get it right and don't mind the fumes wafting across your car while idling at traffic lights, get the Holley 650 double pumper. A 600 DP would probably be a better choice but harder to get. If you want to save a few bucks and screw it on and forget it and breath better, get the Holley 670 Avenger. Paul |
Having a second accellerator pump should NOT make you smell gas fumes while idling.

Ride,
The formula for carbs is generally: CFM=CID*MAXRPM/3456 With a 302 at 6000 RPM, this is ~525 CFM. 600 CFM is plenty. It will run better, cleaner, be easier to jet and more drivable with a correctly sized carb. An oversized carb gains very little if anything in peak HP, has a lower air velocity through the venturii making it mix less completely at lower engine speeds, reduces throttle response, and makes less power at lower revs. Mr. Fixit, you should write a book of what you know - I'd buy a copy in a heartbeat. You've forgotten more than most of will ever learn. Jim |
Come on, Mr Fixit,
Are you really THAT good? Can you get a double pumper to give max power and not be rich at idle? If you can, I'd really like to meet you and shake your hand, because you're a better carb man than me. Believe me, I tried. Paul |

Mr. Fixit,
Any chance you'll be in Ventura on Saturday? Maybe we can talk carbs? Paul |
Paul,
No go on ventura. I am willing to discuss virtually anything via email. If you'll be in norco sunday morning, we can talk carbs and guns. |
