External Voltage regulator question

Has anybody got a wiring diagram for the inards of a standard Ford regulator? or at least a detailed explanation. (I have a general understanding but not the specifics) I'm trying to figure out how my alternator worked without a field connection to the regulator. Wire went into the harness but just stopped a foot or so in. Regulator side had a wire too but I didn't waste time pulling off all the tape. Of course I fixed it but won't be able to test for a few days while I get radiator reinstalled.

I have been chasing a dimming lights at idle problem for some time and expect a better situation now but am terribly curious as to how it worked at all.

You probably have a solid state regulator. This is how the old mechanical regulators were wired:

Thanks for the info Bob.
The print is of some help but creates another question. Notice that there are only two wires off the alternator, "field" and off course the "power out". No stator lead.
Will explore this further and post the solution once I figure it out.
