Power brake/T-5 upgrade
I am trying to see if any one out there has had any experience with converting an automatic to manual in a cobra. I have an Everett-Morrison and I am throwing the 350/ automatic combo in it out for a 351W T-5 combo. I am curious to find out what kind of pedals I will need and if I can upgrade my brakes from manual to power disks while I am at it. I have the two girling reservoirs and It feels like I am driving a school bus when I try to stop. I preferred the brakes in the Superformances I drove, but now I'd like to upgrade. Any help would definitely be appreciated.
Thanks, Chris |
Chris,
What's the old saying..... if you have enough money, anything is possible!! First, if it were me, I'd change the rear gearing to something in the low 3's, as you'll find the t-5/4.11 combo will cause first gear to be almost useless. Both Tilton and Wilwood make dual pedal assemblies that will replace your single brake pedal assembly. I'd contact other EM drivers to see what pedals they are using.... no sense reinventing the wheel here. Switching over to a power brake system will be dependent on the space between the footwell and the left front inner fender. You may have to shop around for a system that will fit into the room you have available. I think you'll have a problem with space mating the tilton/wilwood to the power unit..... may not be room enough to put the clutch m/c next to the power brake booster. Then you'll have to decide on how to disengage the clutch. The tilton/wilwood pedels dictate a hydraulic system. If you have a cable system in mind, well, figure on another type pedal setup. If you go hydraulic, then you have to decide on whether to go external or internal slave. The external is the easiest one to service, but sometimes requires some mechanical fabrication to get it lined up to function as desired. Internal hydraulic throw out bearings are very good..... when they work, but when they have "issues", it required pulling the tranny out to get to it. Good luck with the swap...... sounds like a perfect project to pass away the cold winter nights. - Jim - |
