BEST Rear Coilover Location
I have been looking at several rear coilover setups and noticed that many of the manufactures are running the same rear configurations but totally different locations for their rear coilovers. Some are mounted vertically on top of the rear axel while others will mount their coilovers at mid axel or even below the axel. Some are mounted vertically at 90 degrees, some will have a 20 degree inboard and 10 degrees lean to the front angle yet others go as far as 30 and 10 degrees respectively.
Is there a correct location and angle that truely best suits the Cobra or is it possible that all are correct given the amount of travel that is allowed. An inquiring mind wants to know. I am looking at optimizing my suspension so I am starting my research here since this is probably the best source for real time knowledge. Clois |
I can't believe no one has any thoughts on this. Do we all just drive em the way they are set up and assume that it is as good as it gets.

Engineering 101 - Mounting coil over shocks.
Pick a spot on the axel that looks right, and weld the lower shock mount there. Hook up the lower end of the shock to the previousely welded mount. Move the upper end of the shock around the area of the frame and find another nice spot to weld the upper shock mount. Mount the upper end of the shock to the previousely welded mount. Do the same to the other side of the car. Extreme care must be taken to make a mirror image of the mounting so it doesn't look like you did it haphazardly. DONE This is the easy way to explain why you see so many different ways to mount the coil overs........ Clois, this post is just to let you know your question is not being ignored :D :D |
As you view the axle profile from the front, try to have the axis of the shock intersect with the tire contact patch (although the point can fall in forward or rearward without much penalty).
