Oil Filter Flow question
This is a pretty stupid question, but that never stopped me before. Which way does the oil flow through the filter? Is it in (from the oil pump) through the smaller holes around the circumference, then out (to the bearings, etc.) through the larger hole in the center, or vice-versa? I was looking at a filter last night and couldn't believe I didn't know the answer, but I guess I was sleeping in auto shop the day we discussed the engine's lubrication system.

The first way you said it - into the filter through the outer ring of holes, back into the engine through the central one.
Get it wrong on your remote filter setup and bingo! No oil feed to the engine (but quite possibly good pressure on the guage!). |

You would be amazed how many have plumbed it (incorrectly) in through the center hole. If the pressure sensor is in front of the filter very high pressure reading, if the sensor is after the filter, zero.

for the standard screw on filter, correct above, but for some racing, custom type filters, like the Canton Mecca, it is the other way. It is the "antidrainback" valve under the circle of small inlet holes that keeps the oil from back flowing to the motor, if mounted in reverse. This "valve" is usually a nytrile or other material large gasket, you can see it under the small holes.

Ahhh, errrrr, Hey not that I really need to know and this question is really not from me (?), BUT:how much "high oil pressure" would the gauge be reading? Also, if it was plumbed incorrectly, would the oil still be circulating from the engine to the external filter then through the oil cooler back into the engine?

If plumbed backward the pressure reading would be about that of the pressure relief valve. The oil flow would be close to zero!

I think they are talking about me! BIG MISTAKE to get it wrong. It is amazing how fast an engine will melt down when it is done wrong. Listen to these guys they know what they are talking about. Flow is in through the outside of the filter and out throug the middle tube. Also, if you replaced or removed the gasket between your block and your adapter be sure you have installed correctly. Clois, if I admitted half of the dumb things I've done in the garage I'd never be able to show my face around here again! I definitely fall into the "learn something new every day" category. In my case, I just have to hope I learn the "something new" before I do irreparable harm to my cars--:LOL:

Don't feel bad. I spent half an hour researching my remote setup before I hooked it up. And I had the diagram that came with it showing which line is the in and which is the out and the block and remote adapter were both marked with an in and out whith an arrow pointing that way. Iam easily confused and my remote filter mounting has 4 in and out lets. That way, depending on how you have to mount it for space you can come in either side and go out either side and then it had plugs to screw in and block off the two ports not used. I did know that with just the filter on the block, it went back into the motor throught the middle hole, but did I ever wonder about that remote set up. I finally had a man that does them come over to my house and check what I had done and he said I had it correct. A very rare occurance in my case. Ron :confused: **) |
