Q&A: Converting open rear to posi-trac

How involved is this? Does the entire ring/pinion set have to be replaced? Can it be done without removing the center section? What should I expect cost-wise? (Paying someone ELSE to do it.) May come up with more questions later...

Excel,
Judging by your questions, you need to have a pro do it...the tools are expensive and you need to be accurate. The guys who do 4-wheel off-road diff's are good, figure @ $1000. including the locker. I went Tru-Trac, which uses "throw-out" helix gears to lock, vs. clutches. I assume you have a 9 inch?

It's a Jag IRS. I was thinking along the lines of a clutch-pack type of setup. (Maybe I should use the term limited slip???) I was definitely planning to have a pro do the job. It's way beyond my experience level (and tool inventory).

Keith;
Contact Butch Capps at Mid South Gear Specialists ph.#865 524 4800. Butch does the center sections for Unique. He can fix you up with a posi type or a locker type. The rear end has to come out. You will have to stripp it down to just the center section.
