Is there any such thing as a quiet electric fuel pump??

I'm sure that I have what is considered an electric pump designed to meet the requirements of my motor, that being a 418 stroker with an 850 Holley. However, the pump makes such a racket before the motor catches that it is almost embarassing. What other makes and models of fuel pumps are available that are not as noisy? Mechanical pumps are not an option, nor relocating a fuel pump to the gas tank.

There are different types of pumps available that are quieter. It's all in what type of pump mechanism they use. Other than that the biggest difference is in the price. The quiet ones seem to be a minimum of $300. Just make sure you get one that is rated at the appropriate pressure/flow levels and remember the pressure ratings are different for FI or carb applications.

Hi guys,

I used a Holley blue pump which made a real racket prior to turning the engine over - ignition on and read.

It also was noticeable when I was idling at lights etc.

The engine shop advised me to mount the pump on a plate and then use rubber between the plate and the mount point.

Used lots of rubber washers between washers, bolts, nuts also.

The end result is that it is still noticeable but a lot of the vibration noise is gone. A slight humming is heard during pre start and none whilst idling.

I will agree with Bernie there and say that alot of pumps can be made to quieter simply by useing rubber mounts to stop the vibration echoing into the metal it is mounted to.

Wrapping the pump so it is encased in rubber (insulating material) and then mounting it with rubber grommets will keep things pretty quiet. VW used a similar procedure in their early 80s Rabbits. Pretty quiet, too, given that VW wasn't too advanced in the noise deadening department.

I'm with blackjack, hell, I can't hear anything when the engine is running.

You must have great mufflers.

Just a thought!
