lucas wiper installation??

hi all i was wondering about installation tips on my lucas wiper motor assembly, if anyone has installed these please give me some tips. thanks for the help Neil:MECOOL:

Some "tips"...........

Be very careful when you are forming your three sections of steel tubing for the drive cable. Be sure that you properly flare the ends that are pinched in place by the wiper boxes, and that any burrs are properly removed and the interior of the tubing is spotlessly clean. I would recommend stainless steel for these tubes....some folks use aluminum, and while it is easier to bend, the steel inner cable will eventually start to wear the inner surfaces, creating aluminum debris inside.

Also give a lot of attention to the correct bends of the tubing, avoiding a sharp radius anywhere in the three sections. Pay particular attention to the U shaped section from the wiper motor and the first wiper box. Use enough high quality (I used a clear synthetic) grease to ensure smooth and quiet operation. Be sure to rubber mount your wiper motor for quietness and so that it has a bit of "give".

The December 2003 issue of Kit Car Builder has an excellent article on installing the Lucas wipers. They used a high temperature Teflon lined hose instead of stainless or aluminum tubing. If you need help wiring the park circuit do a search in my gallery and I have a diagram listed that will park the wipers.

thanks budman i appreciate the info , also i was wondering i did not receive any directions on installing these. how do u know where to put the motor.and drill the holes for the wipers , not sure if enzo forgot my instructions. ill have to check thanks again Neil

On my car (Kirkham) the motor mounts on top of the drivers side footbox with the first tubing section doing a very mild 90 degree bend from the motor to the first wiper box.

Also on my car, the centerline between each wiper shaft is 19 1/2 inches, and 1 1/2 inches out from the frame of the windshield. Your car is probably dimensionally different, but this measurement is probably a good place to start. Find centerline of your car and locate your holes 9 and 3/4 inches out from that, and with your windshield in place, measure 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the frame (not the rubber strip) to the center of the wiper box shaft hole. If, when your windshield is in place, the wiper box chrome bezel is just at the lip of your rubber windshield strip, your measurements should be spot on. If it is overlapped by the strip, move it toward the front of the car until it is as described above. Also remember that your wiper boxes pass through your body at an angle, so the edges of the holes, once cut, should be shaped to accommodate that angle.
