WIX oil filters

I just picked up my new-to-me coupe and am going to change the oil for the first time. The car has a few thousand miles on it.

Right now it has a remotely mounted Fram HP-6 filter. I have always heard terrible things about Fram so i have stayed away from them. Lately i have been hearing a lot of good things about WIX filters. I looked it up and they seem to have two filters that are comparable to the HP-6.

51222R is one of their "high efficiency endurance filters"

57003R is one of their "advanced performance" filters

should i go with one of these? Which one? would i be better off sticking with Fram? K&N?

The car is mostly a weekend warrior/track car. I have 3 track days and an autocross scheduled in the next month. I will be using either Royal Purple or Red Line Synthetic oil. I haven't totally decided on weight, probably 10w40 (unless someone has a good suggestion here too).

Thanks,
Steve

Found this info on the two different kinds of filters:

Advanced Performance Oil Filters use a media (T-10) that is rated at a Frazier Air Flow of approximately 267 CFM and is wire backed. The unique wire backing provides a very stable base for a media blend of fiberglass, polyester and cellulose. This media is resistant to high temperatures and water levels in the oil that can plug standard media types. Advanced Performance Media (T-10) is designed to provide a high positive oil flow with low restriction.

These are the Wix recommended oil filters for maximum horsepower increase, to be used primarily on concrete or asphalt tracks.

High Efficiency Endurance Oil Filters use a media (T-71) rated at a Frazier Air Flow of approximately 75 CFM. This media contains a higher resin content than our Advanced Performance Oil Filters to trap and hold smaller contaminants and provide higher efficiency. High Efficiency Endurance Oil Filters include all the other component features as the Advanced Performance Oil Filters.

Steve,

The redline 10W-40 will be just fine for your "new" engine. As for filters, I've been using the good olde fashion for FL1-A-HP filters for my cars for years without ever a problem. Used to work for a company that started using the WIX filters, then switched over to the FRAM as that is what the road/circle track boys wanted.......Never asked why, just figured the guys with the $40,000+ motors had done their homework....................

Oil Filter Study

i have seen that filter study but the racing filters are generally different (i know the hp6 is supposed to be MUCH better than other fram filters).

Steve,
You wouldn't have a problem with either the HP-6 or the Wix. The problem with the Fram that I occasionally see on our circle track engines is when the media collapses and gets pushed out the hole. This is with a drysump turning 9200 rpm though. The Wix has better internal construction and doesn't do this. I use T-71 media.

Me too!

I agree with Mr. M

I'd go with the FL1-HP, available from your local Ford dealership!

HP6

Steve, you'll be fine with the Fram HP6, it's a true, full flow racing filter, the only Fram filter worth anything. Stay away from all other Fram filters.

Expect to pay top dollars, $18 or more for either.

I just switched to a double filter set up and I am using the Wix 51515R.

If you are interested in a case of 6 HP6, send me a private email, I'll make you a deal you can't refuse. ;) :)

i am running the high effeciency Wix, the big NASCAR one, and it seems fine, but be sure you get one with the right threads for your remote mount. I had to change out my threaded Ernie Elliot bushing, from a 1.5 16 thread to a 1.5in 12 thread.

They hold a lot of oil, takes about a quart and a half to fill it. I pay about $20 apiece for them at a NASCAR shop place up in NC.

Hal: The only NASCAR shops that we have on the left coast sell Bobbleheads!

PS: Good filter choice on your part

Wix or FL1 for me

It has been long enough ago now that I don't recall the exact details (That could me as early as what I had for breakfast, but I digress) but a member of a local club once did a semi scientific study. He bought various makes of comparable filters and cut them open to see what was inside. I don't recall all the data but the Fram filters were way at the bottom of the list and the Wix filters did very well. One of the interesting things he found was when the Fram filters were on sale for dirt cheap they were actually different internally then when they were not on sale. I have heard other people say on more than one occasion that all the various makes of filters are manufactureed by just a few companies and branded for whomever they are shipping to. Don't know if that is true or not. I use the FL1 in the SPF and Wix in everything else I have.
