Contemporary brake upgrades (pssst...Racer 99x)
 

Okay guys, I have an early contemporary that has the stock Jag setup on it. Stops pretty good but I am a great believer in more brakes before more horsepower. I am more looking for a setup for some autoxing as opposed to all out road raceing since my car is a street version w/out a rollbar I am not sure that they would let me out on a roadcourse. (And even if they would I am not sure I would want to be out there w/out one).

Basically I am looking for info on different setups you guys have tried and if you still recall part numbers or maybe have bracket designs drawn up that I could have made.

any input will be appreciated.

P.S. I am running 15" rims so as far as I can figure 12" rotors are about the max I could fit in there.

Here is my latest post about brakes. You may want to contact Bill Connelly. You did buy that car from him??? Send me an E-mail and I will give you all the part numbers but you will have to make your own caliper mounting brackets.

I have the early type Jag front end on my early Contemporary 1986. I have just converted my front brakes for the fifth time. The first set was the solid Jag rotors with Jag Calipers. The second conversion was with Vented Jag Rotors. The third conversion was Wilwood Dynalite Calipers with 12.19 Wilwood rotors. The fourth conversion was to Wilwood Superlight Calipers still using the 12.19 Rotors. And now the most expensive and hopefully the final conversion 6 piston Superlight Calipers with another new set of 12.19 Rotors.

If you want great brakes you can skip all the brake setups I did and go right for the six piston Calipers the first time.

Of coure if you want to run larger than 15" wheels forget everything I said and go right for the 14" rotors and Big six piston calipers.

FYI the six piston Superlights cost $250.00 USD Each and the Rotors 43.00

Maybe this can save you some time and money.

Oh yea this is a track only car and I want the best brakes I can get for High Speed stops.

I modified Wilwood to fit my MG spindles so you could always go that route.

If you only want to do it once contact George Petrus at accurate machine. During a recent B trip to LA I stopped by his shop and really enjoyed the tour and insight. He has a bolt on system that is absolutely incredible and will meet any level of racing were likely to participate in! His system by the way replaces the entire upper & lower control arms, hub, rotor 1.25" wide, & calipers. The entire bolt on set-up is @ $3,200 or so.

That may be a good setup. but the brake hardware, rotors,hats, calipers are less than $1,000.00 and if they're is nothing wrong with your A arms I can't see spending an extra $2.200 to replace them.

The only reason I redid my brakes so often was I kept buying the latest stuff that was available.
I am also hard headed and won't give up on 15" wheels.

Like you I'm sticking with the 15" wheels and I currently run the Jag 12.19 vented rotors with the standard 4 piston (heavy as lead) jag calipers.

Do these new superlights bolt right up to the Jag uprights or is there some mod needed?

I'd like to remove weight from the front whilst optimizing the front brakes..

The part number cranky is talking about is:

140-7017BD thru summit and the price is $776.95

I just thought you might want to know.

That kit is a Pinto kit with 4 piston calipers.

If anybody is interested I can give you all the part numbers for what you need with an early Jag front end. ( you will have to fabricate your own caliper mounts.)

If you have a friendly speed shop nearby you can beat Summit prices.

My six piston Superlights were listed at $320 in Summit and my guy sold them to me for $250.

I downloaded the 140-7018-bd spec sheet from Wilwood and it is a six piston caliper and a 12.19 drilled and slotted rotor. It is refered to by Wilwood as their "SUPERLITE 6 BIG BRAKE FRONT HUB KIT VENTED ROTOR TYPE". You are correct, it does fit a 1971-1980 Pinto and the Mustang II front suspension. I have a Mustang II front suspension on my car.

I hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Yeah, I looked at the Accurate Machine set up and it is beautiful but 3,200 is out of my reach right now as I just bought a house that was built in 1835 and as far as I can tell it has not been renovated since then:D :CRY: so I am working very hard to make my budget work for both car and house renovations.

Cranky, the cup guys run 15 inch wheels and they still stop those 3400 pound pigs pretty well so I think you will be ok. When you go to road america this year, you'll find out if they work really well or not. Scott

I thought about buying those Wilwood Cup brakes but they only fit under a 91/2 inch or wider front wheels. Plus I would have to remortgage to afford those. If these new six pistons won't slow me down I'll just let one of those Zo6's by and use his bumper to slow me down.:LOL: :LOL:
