Lucas Wiper
I've searched the archives on this and couldn't find my answer.
I have a Lucas setup--the wipers are typical Cobra style. Wired only to an on/off toggle, low speed--the switching and electrical I can handle, there is a hi/low/park connection on the motor. Plan on using a Lucas wiper switch. Problem----the wiper works fine with the blades off, full sweep of the armature--put the blades on then it binds and only moves the blades 2-3", doesn't blow a fuse, just sounds as if something is slipping and not overcoming the tension of the wiper arms against the glass. Any Ideas? Also how do you disconnect the motor from the cable? loosened the bolt to expose the worm cable but couldn't get anything to come loose? This little sucker has got me confused:JEKYLHYDE |

Here is what is going on inside the motor and lucas switch. Hope it helps you understand how it works. From the sound of it you are having a mechanical, not electrical, problem. Perhaps where the cable goes by the transmissions isn't tight enough? As to removing the cable from the motor, I gave up. I am not using wipers so I was going to take the cable off for storage....ended up storing it in one piece. :rolleyes: |
It is not an electrical problem--Today I switched the lead to the high position--same thing--works fine without the blades--put the blades on it binds or slips--like I said before the electical is not a problem for me.
As Pat said it is probably mechanical? I can put the blades on and put minor pressure on them to "help" them complete the cycle--without the "help"(gentle pressure on the blade arm)2-3" movement on it's own. The guide rods for the wipers are straight from the motor, no kinks, curves, etc. . My thought is the cam gear on the motor may be worn and slipping when under pressure from the tension of the blade arms Only thing is I can not figure out how to get the motor separated from the "worm drive" cable so I can open up the motor to check the cam gear. Since I live in WA wipers would be beneficial. |

You have to take the plate off to get to the drive gear. Once the plate is off you can then pull the cable loose. Send it...no Bring it to me, I'll fix it for ya. Want to install a boiler while you're here? :) DV.....Hey, they're calling for a high of 6 degrees tonight! |
