Anyone running B.F. Goodrich Drag Radials?
Hello,
I was contemplating purchasing a set of B.F. Goodrich drag radials for my Unique. I live in Northern Indiana and the most racing I will do is on the street against a buddy of mine that has a monster motor 1966 GTO from stop light to stop light and an occasional trip to the drag strip. With hopefully 4 or 5 road course events this year. I have a couple of questions: 1. Could you please tell me your experience with these tires? Grip improvement over "standard" tires, wear, driveability, stability over 100 mph. 2. Would these tires work as a street/road course hybrid tire on the FRONT of your Cobra? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Scott |
Scott, I've been running the Drag TAs for a couple years and just bought my second set. My first were 325/50/15s, which did a great job replacing some BFG TA Touring that were almost the same size. They worked just fine with my smaller engine (402 Chebby)but they would not hold the 596 ft #s my 496 makes. Even a hard shift into second made for too many anxious moments wondering if I could get the car straight. I just put on 345/55/15s which are 2" taller and 2" wider. I've only nailed the car once from a dead stop with the new tires and was pleasantly surprised at just how well they did hook up. I had 19#s pressure and didn't do any warm ups and the car launched harder than it ever had for me from a dead idle. (Hughes TH400 w/10" converter). The black marks on the pavement were less than 30' long, which is a real improvement over what the old tires used to do. Part, I'd think due to effectively changing my gear ratio with the taller tires and part from the additional rubber on the road. My car isn't set up for sustained high speed but I've not had any problems with the tires the few times they went over 120 MPH. My old tires wore relatively well and still have plenty of life in them. They just didn't handle what I put at them. Come to AZ and I'll make you a good deal on them.
By the way, I bought both sets at Costco, believe it or not and they gave me the best deal, mounted, balanced, and out the door. The special ordering took only a few days and they were glad to do business. |
Thanks Karl,
I wish I were in Arizona! We had another snow storm last night. |
580;
I have a set for my 65 Mustang,I picked up about .4 of a second at the drag strip over standard street tires.....Mine have warn pretty good,I have used them on the street very little,usually when I come back from the drag strip and have not had time to put my street tires back on for a few days.... I would NOT recommend them for the street,road course or the front of any car.....The side walls are really soft and made for drag racing,if you run them on the street,you have to put a lot of air in them for cornering and I find at higher air pressures you lose the extra grip you gained by using them in the first place..... At the drag strip I ran 14 psi in mine...street you need at least 25 psi or more....Not real good on wet roads as the tread is very shallow..... David |
