Electric fuel pump Question
Is their an inline electric fuel pump that does't need to be mounted below the bottom of the fuel tank. I'm helping a friend put a 502 in his 68 Camaro. Trying to get his car ready for the Hot Rod Power Tour. Any ideas or suggestions? Jim

My Holley "street" pump draws through a Fram filter cannister from approximately 4" above the tank "out" line on my ERA. Has done so for about 12 years. |

Understand that an electric pump has very little suction on the feed side. This is why it is a good idea to mount it as low and as close to the fuel tank as you can. You should also place the filter after the pump for the same reason. I have run an electric Carter pump on my Dodge 340-6 car for years and it is not below the tank but it is at the lowest point on the car I could get it and as close to the tank as I could fit it. I run that poor engine up to 8,000 and have never had a fuel problem. Just get it as close and as low as you can and it should be fine. |

I'd re-think the advice about the fuel filter after the pump. It's always preferable to filter fuel BEFORE any pump[s]. The pump can pull it. ...Especially on a car that's going to do a 2000 mile road trip with some desert gas stops. Respectfully, |
The Carter pump has a screen on the inlet side, keeps out the big chunks. Will your fuel system run a "sock" in the tank? I Dont think extra filters are a problem, before, after, or both. The carbs or injectors are a different story. :3DSMILE:

Electric fuel pumps push fuel they don't suck fuel. Unlike the mechanical pump which will do both. Very important to have a low pick up point on the tank so that gravity will push the fuel out to the electric pump and then the pump will push it forward from there. Barry Grant wants a filter before the pump. Clear as mud? Hope this helps.

Does anybody make an in tank pump for a carb engine without too much tank mods? Jim

Chevy made one for the Vega, Jag made one that used the same AC pump. It is good for small block engines that do not make a lot of horsepower. The last of the Jag's that used carbs may have a better pump. |
Most pumps are vane type and very suseptable to small debris(Holley among the worst for this) always put a filter before the pump. cheap insurance. chuck
