Fe Ground Clearance

HAS ANYONE GOT AN IDEA OF GROUND CLEARANCE FROM THE FLYWHEEL, 427 FE AND TOPLOADER?

REDSC400 03-15-2004 09:14 AM

I think ground clearance would vary to some extent for each make of Cobra reproduction car as well as the spring setup (which can allow you to lower or raise the car). On my car, the lowest part is the very bottom of the Milodon oil pan which is about 4 1/2". You have to be very carefull to say the least.

4-4.5" is about right from the oil pan (Canton Racing in my case), but the Lakewood shatterproof bell-housing and flywheel coverplate will be lower than that unless you cut them down. Mine are cut to the same level as the oil pan, and many others do the same..

Since the engine and trans. are set so far back from the front wheels it's not as vulnerable as you might think, but speed bumps are a killer, and you do need to be careful.

Adjustable Carrera-style coil-overs are nice in that you can adjust the ride height.

I suppose you mean bell housing?, anyway, cut off the bottom lip (see pics) and, you could do what I did and add skids. (see pics
again)

I ride at about 3 3/4" with a Canton oil pan and Lakewood bellhousing. And that is since I cut the bottom three holes off my bellhousing. Before that I was between 3 and 3 1/2". But on the bright side, I haven't had any problems scraping bottom in almost 4 years. KNOCK ON WOOD!

427 S/O - What type of material did you use for the skids ?

427 S/O 03-15-2004 01:01 PM

I" teflon, got it at a local plastic supply.

And I thought I was crazy for even thinking about cutting off the bottom of the Lakewood bellhousing! How did you cut it off? Was the engine/trans installed at the time? I'm in the same situation: plenty of clearance for the Canton oilpan but the bellhousing is lowest point.

Over the winter I installed a new aluminium flywheel and new clutch. While I had it off I used my jig saw to cut it off. Jigsaw is junk now!

A friend of mine cut his off while it was on his car using a portable band saw (about 12" long and looks like a portable plane). He did a better job than I did because he was able to cut a straighter line than I did. I had to grind mine down to even my cut line.

Used my porta band saw, also use a stright edge to keep it clean.

Dave,

I cut mine off with an angle grinder with a "thin" 1/8 thick wheel. I was amazed at how easy it was to do. It took a total of about 3 minutes with the bellhousing off the car (and it looks straight).
