Left Field Question

When you buy a new engine you are told to break in the engine/ cam. You all no the routine. Here is my question...

Are new car engines broken in at the factory?

RedBarchetta 03-25-2004 02:20 PM

Yes, but they are typically run on natural gas. A temporary manifold/apparatus is affixed and they start up and test run all the engines via LPG. I can't say with certainty how long of a break-in they achieve, but I know they do this to seat the rings and check for the obvious (fluid and vacuum leaks, etc.).

Thanks

New cars have roller cams that don't need the cam (lifter) break-in procedure. The rest of the new cars have overhead cams that have no lifters to break-in either.

Wow, I had no idea new car motors were broken in w/ natural gas. I know it's only 1:50, but the way things were going today, I didn't think I was going to learn anything new.

But alas, another day goes by that I don't have to refute that "ya learn sumpin' new every day..."

New engines are not broken in at the factory. They are started, checked for unusal noises, checked for proper oil pressure and ignition timing (if applicable), and that's about it. They are only run for a VERY short time, certainly not long enough to break them in.
