351 Cleveland
i have a 1977 ford f-150 custom 4x4 that i am building.it has a 2 barrel 351 cleveland. I was told the engine came out of a 1973 mercury cougar. i am trying to find some type of identification numbers on it. i have read that originally there was a tag placed near the coil. in my case, the tag has been removed. where else on this engine can i find some id numbers??? any information wil help!

An old Ford book I have called "Off Highway Operation" has the following:
If the tag [under the coil or at the front of the engine] is missing, a number may be at the front of the block such as 9J121628, wherein the first digit is the model year. Another number on the front of the block is the Engine Build Date Code, such as 8J13S. The first digit is the calender (sic) year the engine was built and the letter next to it the month, with "A" for January, etc., excluding "I"... hope that helps... |
i have looked on the front of the engine but i can still not see any numbers anywhere... where abouts should they be?

mine was not readable under all the paint when I first got my block.
I think it was by the head on the drivers side. |
You might have better luck getting the block casting # and indentifying it that way. It is located above the starter. Unless the whole drivetrain was changed,you probably have a 351M,they use different bellhousngs and the Cleveland was out of production by '77.

As WDZ says, you need to look at the block casting number above the starter.
All 2 bolt main 351C's are D0AE-D. 4 bolt main blocks will be either D0AE-C or D3ZE-A. 400 production started in '72. 351M started in '75, so if it really came out of a '73 Cougar it probably is a 351C, but check the casting numbers. i removed the starter and finally... i found some numbers. the first number read .. D2AE-CA. parallel to that it read 2A20. what do these numbers mean???

I don't have any info on that block code, my book says it's not a 351C.
D2AE would be a '72, the 400 was produced in '72. The 351C, the 400 and the 351M from around that time period all look very much alike, externally. The deck heights are different, but hard to measure in the vehicle. The ID tag or, failing that, the block code are all you can go by without tearing down the engine. Ed |

thanks. that helps out alot. since it appears that i have a a 4V block, someone must have put 2V heads, intake and carb on it. is there any way to identify the year of the these items? (it seems like they are not originally from the motor) i am guessing that the heads, intake and carb are from another motor. the heads do have the "2" raised number in the corner, so i believe they are 2V Cleveland heads. if there is any way to tell the year, please let me know. (maybe the numbers on them? if so let me know and i will post them) ...thanks
