Grinding noise when hit bumps
Guys,
I hear a grinding noise and also feel vibrations in the shift handle when I hit a dip in the road. It is a definate metalic grinding that feels like it is coming from the transmission. I remove the safety loop and the noise is still there. I have looked every where under the car and can't see any place where parts are rubbning. Here is my set up EM 351 W Tremec 3350 Ford 8.8 any ideas? |
Roger: Check to see if the rear tires, the wheels, or rotors are rubbing on something at full bump. Also check the eBrake cable and related parts.

Thanks Rick

Rbray, I would check for binding in your driveshaft, maybe the angle is off during bounce. just a thought.

Just another thought, if driveshaft is too long it may be jaming into transmission tailhousing at full bump????
Grasping at straws???? Rick |
Thanks for the suggestions.
My next move is to pull the drive shaft and look for wear marks. |
I found where the noise is coming from. I pulled the driveshaft and the front u-joint is binding.
I have a few options: I can change the pinion angle which is a major pain. or I could put a shim under the transmission mount to change the angle. It also ocurred to me that my transmission mount maybe flexing too much when I hit bumps. Is there such a thing as a solid transmission mount? Let me know what you think |
There are solid tranny mounts and also poly mounts....I use the poly mounts on the engine and tranny
|
Jack,
Thanks for the input. I just got off the phone with Summit and I ordered a poly mount. The tech guy advised me not to go with a solid mount unless I changed the motor mounts to solid as well, ohter wise I would wreck my drive train. Thanks again |
I had to install upper adjustable links to adjust my pinion angle. Solved my problem. 9" 4 link live axle.
Don't know what kind of rear you have. Roscoe |
Roscoe,
I have a Ford 8.8 live axle. It has adjustable control arms, but I'm hoping that the poly mount will take care of the problem. If not I will adjust the arms. |
My tranny cross memeber used to twist up all the time. Caused all kinds of havoc on the driveline.
|
I put a quarter inch shim under the transmission mount today.
Problem solved. Thanks everyone |
