Cams
How much cam is too much?
|
Anything over 300 or the lobe size of Pamela Andersons headlights!!

Most hot rodders overcam their motors.
What's the expected redline of your shortblock? Valvetrain? Now pick a cam that makes it's power before that RPM. Lets say you don't have the parts in your motor to spin it to 7000, why have a cam that is just coming into the middle of it's powerband at your shiftpoint? Midrange torque is where it is at, top end HP isn't all it's cracked up to be. |
Mr.fixit
I like the way you think. Thats the kind of answer I was looking for. Most guys over cam because they only look for big cam spec.s |
Building an engine is more than just throwing parts at it and hoping it works out. You need to sit down and figure out what you want it to do for you and build it to meet that goal.
What kind of trans? What weight car? What gear set in the rear? All of these questions and more should me answered by you BEFORE you start buying parts. Building engines is as much a science as it is an art. |
