Operating Temperature
I have a 302 with Iron Heads and an Aluminum intake manifold. I recently installed an adjustable temperature control fan switch. What is the best engine operating temperature for this set-up? I am currently running at about 200 degrees.

Operating temps in the 180 - 200 range seem to be the norm. My 427 sideoiler pegs at the 175 - 190 range, depending on various conditions.
If you have an adjustable unit that opens at 160, I would recommend that you leave it at 160, as well as installing a thermostat that opens at 160. With the Texas summer coming up, it helps if the cooling system kicks in early, before you find yourself in a situation that makes your temp spike. Bud:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE |
Find I run at 130 in the coooler months here. This will rise to about 185 -190 during the hotter periods.
I have a dash over ride switch to pull on the fan if I feel it may come up quickly. Particularly in stop start traffic where I just pull it on straight away to prevent any heat. The engine oil cooler fitted to the front of the lower radiator also has made a big difference. I am guessing it dropped the temperatuire by about 30 or more to the above temps now. I am using a BIG aluminium radiator though. Anti boil coolant etc. Cheers Bernie |
