Noisy Fuel Pump
Hi,
I have a Holley (Red)out of tank electric fuel pump and the noise is starting to bother me. The pump is currently hooked up with hard lines. Holley suggested putting putting a short run of soft line before and after the pump so it doesn't transfer as much noise/vibration. Do you think the soft lines will make much of a difference? Should I bother. Is there a quieter pump out there? I guess I can always raise my idle to about 1200 rpm so I don't hear the pump. Thanks |
All pumps make a racket, it's one of the joys of owning a high performance race car. You might try placing a bit of soft insulation between the pump and the chassis (or wherever you mounted it.)

I am running the Holly Blue pump and I can hear it when the car is stopped but not at idle. I used a short hose on each side and also mounted a piece of rubber between it and the frame where I have it mounted just in front of the tank. I also put a toggle switch in line with it so I can turn it off if I want to have the power on to check something. Also makes a good safety thing if I use both switches. Ron |
Holley fuel pressure regulators can be noisier than the pump, especially if mounted to something like the firewall which acts like a soundboard for the chatter.

I had the very same complaint with my Holley Blue pump....noise. The fuel regulator that was mounted to the firewall was creating more noise as the pump vibrations buzzed the firewall. After 2 months I took it off.
I removed the Holley that had been bolted directly to the frame and installed a Carter HP 100 gph pump that comes with insulating hardware and does not require a fuel regulator, unlike the Holley. The Carter is much quieter now, does not vibrate off the firewall. With the Holley I could even hear the fuel pump buzz, on occasion, when coming to a stop sign at idle. The Carter still makes some noise but it is much quieter than the Holley. I'm not disappointed that I switched to the Carter. |
When mine was running I had two 7psi 7o gph electric fuel pumps. One at a time for street use.I could hear it coming up from the roll bar. I didn't notice it untill a passenger called it to my attention.I'm going to be running two 15 psi 100gph pumps through a Barry Grant diaphram controlled fuel log(return type system)They pick up at different levels of the tank sump. When the higher pump stumbles you swap pumps and start looking for a gas station.
