Gear Ratio recommendation

I'm currently running a 3.07 Ratio with a manual 4-speed (4th gear is 1:1)
now I want to put in a LS1 with a Tremec 6-speed (4th is 1:1, 5th is 0.76 and 6th is 0.5)
does anyone have experience with this transm. setup?
oh, my tires are 245/60/15 outer diam. approx. 26"
I've thought that 3.73:1 would be a good choice, what do you guys think?
I still want to have thrust in the 6th and I don't need to go 250mph and I don't care about gas mileage, but I also don't want the 1st to become too short!
Someone told me that he's running 3.56, but he can use the 6th only as a overdrive, just like it was meant to be. He said there's not much thrust left in the 6th, if any at all.
first I've thought about 3.90 or even 4.11 but then my 1st would become very short!
your opinions please.......:MECOOL:

I was running 3:55 with a five speed. 1st was a joke, to low, fry the tires or short shift. 5 and 6 speed trannys typically have a LOW first gear all ready. 4 speed has a higher 1st gear.

Currently running a 3.1 rear gear with a top loader. 60 mph in first, 2800 rpm at 70. 1st is TO high for around town but works out pretty good at the drag strip. I have TONS of power and that DOES make a difference in what gear ratio's to choose.

Hey BF:
I'm running a Termec 5 speed with a 3.73. My 5th gear is 0.68. I've got 275/60-15 rear tires. First gear is a liitle too low but I love rolling down the interstate at 60-70 mph at around 2,000 RPM! Over the course of a summer I save a zillion engine revolutions.

I would worry more about the first 3 gears than the top 3, if this is a street driven car. you will spend more time in 1-4 than 5 and 6. This is a corvette or camaro setup. Seek advice from those guys as to the useability of various rear end ratios.

Have

Richmond 6 speed OD

3.0 rear

Seems perfect to me. As noted above 1st gear is still LOOOW and I shift very soon after take-off. In 6th on road trips I can cruise at 80 mph all day long with lower wear and tear on the motor and tranny. In urban driving even on the freeway I seldom use 6th.. 5th seems good enough. I would never "go back" to a 4 speed.
