silicon restricting fuel flow?
my 289 fia was running fine 'til i tried to correct gas odor
problem by using a silicon sealant between the tank and the filler neck on my era. i think that some of the sealant got into the tank.any suggestions? thanks, steve |
Silicone RTV doesn't work to seal in fuel.

The 1st rule of carbs or any fuel component is...........
Never , ever put any silicone sealer on it , period. Good luck getting it out, if any small pieces got into your carb through the fuel line, you'll probably never get them out.Can't dissolve them with carb cleaner,gunk,or anything,Might be able to blow it out with an air nozzle. AS above.....
and when you get around to "fixing" it again, go to the parts house and get a sheet of gasket material and a can of Permitex aviation "form a gasket" sealer. Cut the material to fit and coat both side with the permitex. Should take care of your problem..... did with my car. |
Someone did this to my old car on purpose - squirted a load of silicone sealant into the tank (mean-spirited swine).
Only thing I could do was to fit an extra fuel filter (the glass, cleanable type) in the suction line, before any other filters and the pump, where I could see it and get to clean it easily. It took a long time for that stuff to stop coming through, but at least, at worst, it meant a 5 minute filter clean at the side of the road. These glass-bodied filters are a mixed blessing - be aware that they are NOT suitable for the delivery (pressure) side from the pump, and need to be shielded from potential mechanical impacts. They HAVE caused fires in other cars, so be advised. BUT - they do let you stop and clean out the silicon gunk before it gets to more inaccessible parts. IMHO, they are just acceptable on a suction line, so long as they are protected from knocks or bangs. |
It is good to have two fuel filters. One between the tank and pump and one between the pump and carb.
I had silicone in my tank and the first filter caught all of it. Roscoe |
Im have a locking cap inside the filler cap .
