Check Engine light - Honda Civic 2000

My 200 Honda Civic has seen 60000+ miles. Just before I had the 60k service done, the check engine light came on, and spark plugs were a tad dirty. Honda Services said there is a problem with the sensor, and hence the check engine light; they would charge me 300+ to fix (something to do with re-setting the computer in the car). I balked, and continued driving. My milegae has been low (about 60-70 miles less). Recently, the check engine light went off by itself for a full gas tank, but came back on again next time I filled gas. Mileage just that time was normal, but went down soon as the light came on. So, what may be my problem?

Thanks

Did they tell you what the code was?

Might be an Oxygen sensor in the exhaust that enrichens fuel mixture for certain conditions, perhaps it defaults to a rich setting when it begins to go bad and turns the light on?? I believe Autozone Parts Stores will diagnose or pull codes for you at no charge.

Honda Civic...check engine light?

Send it to the crusher.

One down...

O2 sensor

Might be the O2 sensor. I would buy the pricey genuine Honda sensor, I replaced my O2 sensor with a Bosh unit, it never worked right, was lucky enough to return it!
good luck.

I have to agree with Jamo.

Given the Alamo, I take it you don't like tacos?

Be thankful the check engine light is still on. I can't get mine to start. :3DSMILE:

I went to www.clubhonda.com and I just dropped a bunch into a aero kic while I figure the rest out though.

Two.

At this rate, it'll only take a couple of hundred years to get them all off the road.

Just wait a little longer, maybe the "check engine light" will comeon all of them.

There is the realization that "Tora! Tora! Tora!" means nothing to some people these days.

Just my $0.02

The "check engine" light means the auto-self destruct sequence can not be aborted. Best take it to the crusher before it does some serious damage.
