One wire Altenator?'s

Guys,
If I use an internally regulated one wire altenator do I still need a voltage regulator?
Can anyone recommend a good brand?
Thanks

Roger;

No you do NOT use an external voltage regulator with a one wire alternator, the voltage regulator is built into or on the rear of the alternator........

You can buy this voltage regulator at any alternator shop, they usually go for 39.95 and it takes all of one minute to install on any old type ford alternator.... I bought the 19.95 Auto Zone special about six or seven years ago and did just what I have said, still working perfectly on my car.........

Rbray,
I like the alternator's that use a voltage regulator, The one wire alternator has an internal voltage regulator. I prefer the external voltage regulator alternator, plus there not that hard to wire up, I have a diagram if you need it.

Cobra's, is there anything they can't do

GWC
1)They can't stop heads from turning
2)They can't stop the owner from getting a 1001 ? when he fills
up @ the local gas station.
3)They definitely don't fly well

You can convert most any internal regulated GM alt. to a single wire by running a jumper wire from the field terminal to the battery terminal on the alt.. Then run a single wire to the positive terminal on the starter relay or to the +battery terminal.

I have been using an "Enos components" single wire conversion regulator on an externally regulated 63 amp GM regulator for years. It is the size of a matchbook and plugs into the rear of the alternator wherethe two wire plug normally goes. One red wire is all that leaves the alternator.

the answer to your original question is no.

Guys,
It turns out the conversion kit I saw in summit wont work for me.
Does anyone have a part number for a conversion kit that can be bought at a local autoparts store?
I have a Delco externally regulated unit
Thanks

I run exactly what you are looking for, it is a regulator and single wire conversion all in one, and it's the size of a matchbook. I got mine in about 1992, it still works great, give them a call.
