My problem has been storage space

Too many tools and too much gear in the garage and my extra room downstairs. This is now solved this week since we had a large storage shed installed in the side yard. After I paint it and enhance the security of the shed I can clear space in the garage and get to something like Cobrajeff's snake den. One thing I have already done is insulate part of the garage and use pressure treated plywood as a base for whatever over-layment I choose. Being a master tile setter in a former life, I may do the "checkered flag" tile theme where it's feasable. Likely will paint the floor with Griot's Garage floor paint, too.

What I used in the part of the shop was a Metal Hilide unit when on looks like some one turned the sun on (has to be at least 12 ft. off the ground) this works the best that I have found.Where the ceiling is not 12 ft. I used recess 8ft tubes there.Over the bench hung 4 ft. Us old farts have to have a lot of light:3DSMILE:

For those that are aspiring to Garage Mahal, but don't have the dough, check out Home Depot's "Ultimate Garage Contest"--- a $10k garage remodel. Write an essay about your garage and send pictures. Read the fine print: you have little say in what they actually do to your garage, and I think the remodel is televised...

Ok BnB you da master--I've been in the business for 35 + years and I've encountered very few "master" tile setters under the age of 40 or so that hadn't been setting tile since their early teens.

Not doubting you I'm sure after 9mos to a year or more you were really a master---God knows you must have the talent.

PS at least you can find me 'cuz I don't feel the need to hide "in my compound" patrolled by my attack dogs. And am not afraid to post my e-mail or address. Grouchy:LOL:

This was a really good garage lighting thread until Dangerous Doug showed up. Should have known with a name like that.

In my garage, one side (34' X 40' X18' tall) has two 500watt Metal Halide lights with 8' flourescent fixtures around the perimeter and over the work benches and tools. The other side (32' X 40' X 14' tall) has 16-8' fixtures. The Metal Halide is much brighter and colorization is as close to sunlight as any man-made light can get. BTW, I think BnB is more of a "Show Tunes" kind of guy.
Martin, is that album cover from your personal collection?

BeanCounter 05-30-2004 06:54 AM

Well metal halide it is. Guess I'll have a project for tomorrow.

David,

You any relation to Bob Shelton, the field trialer, down there.

kountzecobra 05-30-2004 07:36 AM

Don't think I have kin in MO, but who knows?

Double Venom 05-30-2004 08:24 AM

Relatively small shop: 40x42 18' center. So, if I do the halide fixtures, actually putting in four units, you think I should have some HO flourescents on the perimeter too? I will certainly have some over the work benches.
DV..I love talking shop building as much as Cobra building!

kountzecobra 05-30-2004 09:31 AM

I like having some flourescents around too because they turn on much faster than the halides. Also, if you lose power for an instant, the flourescents will come right back on. The halides have an HID ballast that has to cool off, and then will warmup and come back on in a couple of minutes.

To ToyCollector's comment above: Hey, I was just standing there, minding my own business contemplating garage lighting, when these two guys just start pummelling "Back In Black". I suspect that exchange wasn't a love-fest...

So, I've got a pretty good idea on what I want to do with the lighting. I think I may also add some air lines around the garage. Any other trick garage ideas out there? Can't fit a lift, but that would be pretty cool. I'm limited to a fairly deep, two car garage.

I guess the coolest feature would be a Cobra...

kountzecobra 06-01-2004 05:51 PM

Garage must-haves (Besides Cobra): Well-stocked Refrigerator, stereo (With various AC/DC, Ozzy, Kid Rock, ZZ Top, etc.....CDs, TV with Speed Channel on 24hrs/day, Fans for hot weather, large pictures of small naked women, and several comfortable chairs for relaxing. If you have any room left, a few tools are in order but not necessary! :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE:
