original cobra fuel pumps

OK. Help me undestand this :
The original 427 cobra street models used a mechanical fuel pump on the engine and a single electric fuel pump in the trunk. Why two pumps? Was there a regulator on the system or was the electric fuel pump the adjustable version of the SW240 ( the 240A)?
If the electric pump failed, would the mechanical pump still supply the carbs? Or visa versa?
Why am I asking? Well , I'd like to replicate the street set-up and I was curious.

Greg...
The 427 street set-up was simply the mechanical pump on the engine.

The 427 Comp and S/C cars had the oversized 42-gal tank, with two pick-ups.
The higher (normal) pickup ran to the mechanical pump on the block.
The lower pickup went to a pair of S/W 240A-12 pumps in the trunk... and then up to the output of the mechanical. thru a tee-connector.

Why?... when the top feed ran dry, they would flip on the electrics, as a reserve. Crude and simple solution to "no-fuel-gauge" :D

Thanks for the clarification.
