17" wheels....
We've just finalized the purchase on our new SPF #1845 and I'm seriously considering a set of PSE 17" knock-offs to complete the setup. My question is, I've enquired into a set of 17" wheels with a 5" backspacing, is this an adequate amount or am I going to run into “issues” when it comes time for mounting. Additionally, in our e-mails he posted something to the effect of..." the wheels fit Trigo adaptors, not the new SPF ones," and unfortunately this threw me for a loop because I was under the impression that all the SPF pin drive setups where the same. Can anyone set me straight on what the correct offset/backspacing I'll need to fit 335/30/17s on the rear with 275/40/17s on the front.

You are going to get your best advice directly from SPF, I wouldn't hesitate to call them if you haven't already, or from other SPF owners who have 17" wheels. I have an ERA and have ordered 17" pin drive wheels from PS Engineering, which I'm still waiting for by the way. I am using a 17"x9" wheel with a 275/40ZR17 tire in front with a 5.30" back spacing. In the rear I am using a 17"x11" wheel with a 315/35ZR17 tire with a 4.50" back spacing. I doubt if these numbers will be correct for your car, but they should be in the ball park. I would also call Trigo or PS Engineering (I will mention they are hard to get ahold of, so keep trying, and try early in the morning like 6-7am PDT). They have undoubtedly made 17" wheels for SPF's before. It would be best to confirm the numbers from at least two different sources, since that is not something you want to get wrong. When you called PSE did you tell them it was for a new SPF? I ordered a set for my SPF and they sent the correct ones.

Phil Schmidt is a master wheelwright. If he says they will fit they will fit. I struggled with the same issues and in the end let him decide on whether I went 5.5 or 6". I couldn't be more pleased with the result.
I have always had issue with the cobbled together look of the 427 Cobra and what happened when they put the independent rear in the original cars. Admit it, it looks like a high school shop project. The fit is terrible. Go look at my gallery, you can't slip your hand between my tire and rear fender at any point. They have never rubbed once. I opted for the 11" wheel with a 315/35. It is a common (less expensive tire) size as it is OEM for the newer vette. Indeed the pins on the SPF and the Trigo are different. Trigo uses 1/2" diameter pins on either a 5 on 4 1/2 or 4 and 3/4 center. I think SPF pins are smaller in diameter, sorry I don't know the size.

Here's what I came up with for SPF #298. Front: 17x9.5 5.28 backspace. Rear: 17x11 4.875 backspace. My wheels don't use the knockoff adapter so my own backspacing is .375 less.
With 315/35 and 275/40's, they clear everything just right, they are in enough to allow the car to sit low but still clear on the inside. |

Of course I'm on crack most of the time I am here... The pins on Trigo wheels are 3/4" and bolt on over 1/2" lug nuts. I think the original cars used 1/2" pins. I think my PSE wheels were $650 each in natural finish. I can't remember. I likr them that well.
