Brighter Tail Lights

Terry -

I searched several times, but could not find the thread from awhile back where this subject was covered in spades.

Most of the rectangular taillights have the bulb facing "up" instead of "rearward" - which means that LED bulbs will not do any good in that application. LED's are directional, and the bulb must face rearward to work. There are a number of LED's from different suppliers out there. I found that the cheap ones I got at the local auto parts store were not even as bright as my stock bulbs!

Halogen bulbs burn much brighter, but generate a lot of heat, too.

What I ended up doing was to buy taillights from Superformance with a dual back-can. I then rewired my car to separate stop and turn functions from the tailight circuit. I wired the top bulb for taillight function, and the lower one for stop/turn. I put a regular bulb in the upper position, and installed a Halogen bulb in the lower (stop/turn) position. The thought being, taillights could be on for hours on a long drive (and a Halogen bulb might overheat the plastic lens), stop and turn are used only intermittently (should not build up heat).

Here's a sketch of my conversion:

I cut-out part of the mounting plate (shown by crosshatch) and opened up the taillight hole in the body of my car as much as possible to allow maximum light to pass through.

Hope this helps.

LED LIGHTS

Cobra Dude and I have been working on that, we are using 21 led bulbs facing rearwards but the problem is the Rectngular Lens have a circular patern to inhance the 1157 bulb which kills the brightness on the Led bulbs and the other half has a cross hatch which is even worst .
We need a clear red lens to make this work .
Its cool
