Help a moron with bolt circle diameters??

Okay guys, here goes another stupid question...

My Shell Valley wheel studs "should" have 4 1/2" BCD, right? I measured the distance between centers of adjoining studs and they were 2 5/8". I then measured one of my Corvettes and the studs were about (quessing here) 3/16" further apart.

So a stock Chevrolet should be 4 3/4" right? And if my Cobra's got a smaller pattern, it can really only be 4 1/2", right? It seems as if all I ever see advertised is 4 1/2" or 4 3/4"

Sorry for the simplicity here, but I'm looking at making a three hour drive to get a set of wheels and I REALLY want to be sure they're the right pattern before heading out.

Thanks, Tom

Tom,
For a 5 lug bolt circle with a diameter of 4-1/2", calculating the distance between adjacent studs using the law of cosines gives 2.645". That is very close to the 2-5/8", with .020". I would say that you definitely have a 4-1/2" bolt circle.

On a five bolt pattern, measure from the center of one stud to the outside of the stud across from it (next stud if you were following the star torque pattern).

This will give you the bolt circle diameter.

On a four bolt pattern measure from center to center on opposing studs.
