Re torque FE heads in unique??

Unique owners,
Is there a secret to re-torqing my new Edelbock F.E. heads while the engine is in the car? The aft 3 lower bolts on each side
are shrowded by the foot boxes.

Steve,

I have just placed my new FE in the car and I can tell you the back two bottom bolts on each side can not be properly torqued in the car.

ERA,,, yup I know this one! Same here. Drivers side real bad, passenger side not to bad.

I had to remove the head studs AND jack up the motor on the drivers side to remove/install the head too.

By the way: What torque setting did you guys use for alloy heads? Iron heads? I torqued in three steps.

Brent,
Yeah it's ugly all right. The only thing I came up with so far is to either remove the engine, or maybe I can lift it off it's mouts and roll it one way then the other. Looks like I'm gonna call the Weavers on this one.

Steve,
It can be done, however it is not easy.
I used a deep socket and a swivel joint for the last one and a short socket with a swivel joint and a 3 inch extension for the next two. The swivel joint will change the torque reading some as the axis of the torque wrench is not lined up with the ceneter axis of the head bolt, but it should still be within + or - five pound feet.
Definately not the perfect situation but it can be done.

Did this on my Unique and my ERA with head studs on. Removed trans cross member bolts, removed headers, removed shifter/linkage and hoses, removed motor mount bolts, used an engine lift/tilter and twisted the motor just enough each direction to clear the footboxes. Or, the swivel socket trick sort of works with lots of patience and persistence. It can be done.

Otherwise, its almost worth pulling it out if you don't like puzzles. :)
