Any thoughts on this oil?
Guys, I just got back from the BMW dealer with oil and filter for my M3 (going to try 6-month intervals instead of the annual changes recommended by BMW). They said the M3, M5 and Z8 all use a special racing 10W-60 synthetic, called Casrol TWS Motorsport. Anyone familiar with this stuff? Is it "too much oil" for our motors? Can you get too much quality in oil?
The back label says: SAE 10W-60, exceeds API, SJ/CF, ACEA A3/B3, Porsche Special Oil Approval, Exclusive approval for BMW M3, M5 and Z8. Expensive, too! |
Hey Ken, what did that stuff run ya???
Per quart? |
My thoughts on the oil? BMW has you by the balls and is over charging you BIG TIME. SUre it's great oil, theres LOTS of great oil out there. No way I believe this is THE ONLY oil for your Bimmer.
They told two of my friends here the warranty would be void on their car if they didn't use that oil. Stuff like that pisses me off. |
Ernie, I share your sentiments! Trularin, the stuff cost $9.95 list, $8.95 net per quart...that works out to 28 cents per ounce...I think a friend used to sell pot for less than that!
The only good news (?) is that the regularly scheduled maintenance is covered during the warranty period. I bet I find a cheaper alternative after the warranty is done! |
Don't complain too much the "approved "oil for an Enzo.I believe is 60.00 a quart. But replacement engines are 200,000.No thanks,I'll stick with good ol' American iron where any good synthetic will do a great job. That furrin 'exotic stuff makes even 427 parts seem cheap..........and they were plenty good to whup the Yuropeens at Le Mans in the 60's .......or the Vipers and 'Vettes did a real good job on them more recently.

Used to use Shell/BP oil, Blue can, 10W 50. Cost was $.50 per can. Great stuff.
They don't make it anymore. |
Yeah, back when gas was 9 cents a gallon I used Red Devil recycled oil at 25 cents per quart in my worn-out '50 Olds fastback...until it blew up...
Yeah, this thing is a marvelous technological feat of precision, but I sure don't look forward to working on it! Maybe that's the objective with all the new gadgets and electronics...make it so no one can do their own work and they (whoever they are, dealers, pro shops) have a captive audience. |
I use Quaker State 5 - 50 synthetic oil in my daily driver Caddy Northstars. I run Mobil 1 15 - 50 in the Cobra. The synthetic 5 -50 is only around $4

Great if you are the owner of a new BMW and don't want to void your warranty. Try pricing oil for an Enzo Ferrari (don't even ask the price of a filter)...
Mobile 1, Redline, Royal Purple... Mobile 1 is easy to get. Yes it may break down faster (at 500 degrees f.) than Royal Purple (but at 500 degrees that small you are smelling is molten bearing material). (For those of you that don't get Car and Driver or otherwise have access to information on the new $659,000 Ferrari Enzo, you might be amused to know that in order to maintain the factory warranty, owners are required to use the factory specified oil: Shell Helix 10W-60 Synthetic - $60 per US quart - engine holds 12.2 quarts - total cost for oil change: $732 US. Other consumables: One set of front carbon-ceramic brake pads - $6000 One set of front carbon-ceramic brake rotors - $24,000 Sometimes you begin to think that they charge this much for stuff not because it actually costs that much, but because they can and the owners will pay it.) |
