Painting tip?

Have you heard of this technique?

- Spray base coat color (2 coats)

- Spray mixture of 70% base color & 30% Clear (1 coat)

- Spray mixture of 30% base color & 70% Clear (1 coat)

- Spray 100% clear (2 coats)

I'm told this gives maximum "depth"

Your thoughts?

It wouldn't help with non-metallic colors, but I could see where it would have an effect on metallics.

i've been painting high end cars for over 30 years have had my work win at Pebble Beach . depth comes from the layers of clear over the base coat, color mixed in between them will stop the light tramsmission through the layers . now if we're talking pearl you've opened a completely different can of worms

Grumpy,

I've also painted professionally in the past and agree with your points. I still can see the point of the Metallics throughout the layers giving somewhat of a depth difference albeit a minor one at best. For the minute results difference though I don't know why someone would want to do that other than just to say they did. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the process except it almost defeats the purpose of having the clear in the first place. Back some time ago (Mid 1980's) I did some experimenting with a similar concept of what pearlizing does well before it became readily available anyhow. What I did is spray a base coat of color 1 let it flash, spray a coat of a very well Clear" thinned color 2 let it flash and then clear with 2 to 3 coats. I looked weird for the day and age but it was different. Now don't get me wrong, it didn't look anyhting like a real pearl job but it did give it a "depth appearance" advantage over other jobs I had seen done at the time.

John.
