Jaguar IRS Reinforcement
Regarding these:
http://i6.ebayimg.com/01/i/02/91/9a/30_1_b.JPG Does anyone know anything about the triangular braces on these rear lower control arms? I found them while browsing through eBay (I was outbid on them, and the seller knew nothing about them.) I know these are not standard. One of my lower control arms is bent and was thinking such a reinforcement could be beneficial. Does anyone have these triangular braces on their lower control arms? I wonder if they are marketed by any vendors. I guess they wouldn't be too terribly difficult to make with the right tools...but I was just wondering if anyone with a Jag IRS in their cobra knew anything about these. Thanks. |
Gussets
Those are (inside) custom gussets that were added to the lower control arms to keep the end from twisting off under torque or hard braking. They also need at least one on the (outside) as well, and these pictured are only on the inner part of the control arm.
Its a common mod by any of the major manufacturers that use or formerly used Jag rears. ERA, some Contemporary cars, and some Arntz/Butler cars have them. If you have a car without them, it would be smart to have someone add them, its an easy mod, and helps prevent twisting under load. In fact, if you ask around, some might even say it could save your car and your life. We just did an Arntz car for a friend and we did inner/outer gussets using channel steel that was corner cut and flush to the corner, on both ends of each control arm. Worth doing... Keep the rubber side down. :) |
We've been doing it to our shortened control arms since the beginning, and we use trailing arms that take most of the stress off. I can't imagine not doing it to a car that doesn't use trailing arms, like the original Contemporary.
