Ford CV joints
Does anyone know where I can get some new CV joints? My Superformance uses Ford Thunderbird based axles but the CV joints are now obsolete by Ford and their parts depts. don't have them.

NAPA

NAPA doesn't carry new ones, only remanufactured. It's starting to look like there are no sources at all for new CV joints of that vintage.
The next question is: Is a late model Mustang Cobra a possibility? If they have the type of CV joint that bolts to the axle by way of a flange, maybe I could machine shorter axles with flanges and bolt the CV joints on? One of the sloppy points of my current axles is the spline fit between the axle and the CV joint, replacing that spline with a bolted flange is appealing. Does that sound like a good idea? UPDATE, I think those flanges just hold the boot on. I'm still confused |
Have you checked with Doug Reed, he might be able to send you in the right direction? Reed Performance 504-271-2013

or Oldtoff, he has the nice urethane booties that doen't tear as easy.
Or just find an axleshop in your area and get them rebuilt. That's what I used to have done for SPF axles. |
Thanks Doug, they were a help and they had some new ones in stock. I forgot to ask my local dealer because I originally asked about the whole axle assembly instead of the CV joints.
Fixit, do you feel it was unusual to have to rebuild several axles? Should they last longer in the first place? This project started because I have slop in the axles. It may be that the majority of the play is in the spline fit between the axle and CV joint and the joint may be fine anyway but now I'm on a mission to get the best, tightest axles possible. |
