Hood gas lifts

My E-M originally had gas spring lifts for the hood instead of a prop rod. I have looked everywhere for replacement cylinders and have come up empty. All of the over the counter stuff is too stiff at ~ 200 - 300 pound lift meant for steel hoods and tail gates. I probably need something on the order of 50 - 60 pounds given the weight of a typical Cobra hood. Does anyone have any idea of where I might find a set of gas cylinders?

Go to www. McMaster.com. They have all of that stuff....at least that's where I got mine.

Many of the RV dealers carry those in stock as well in all sizes and strengths.

Gas Lift Lock

I had a similar problem with my hood gas lifts. After searching for and not finding a gas lift that was just the right strength, I went into Advance Auto and found a "gas lift lock" that solved my problem. It is a small plastic device that attaches to the gas lift. The arm of the lock is positioned along the gas lift cylinder and when the hood is opened, the arm locks in position holding the hood open. Cost less than $6 and works very good. I'm sure very auto parts stores stock them.

I installed gas springs for both the hood and the trunk on my E-M. I got them from a local company (Van Tech). The springs I used are Stabilus Lift-O-Mat

hood - 752924
trunk - 1421EM

I would use a slightly stronger spring for the hood if I were to do it again.

Check with your local NAPA store. They should have a full selection of gas struts. If you look in the book they have you can find all kinds of different pressures and lengths.

Thanks guys. I ordered lifts from McMaster's on Wednesday morning - std shipping - and they appeared at my door Thursday by UPS. Blew my mind!! Now to slip away from the little lady and her honey-do list long enough to put them on.
