1 wire alternator failure causes.
 
I put a GM 1 wire alternator from NAPA on my SBF. It smoked pretty quickly. Does this indicate anything other than a bad alternator? It's pretty tough to wire it wrong. 1 wire to the battery.

This was the first start on this engine.

Sounds like a bad alternator to me.

You did wire the lead from the alternator to the POSITIVE battery terminal, right? (Wiring to the negative terminal would put a dead short on the alternator, but I don't see how it would ever become energized to produce any current.)
