What effects do taper and out of roundness
have on the bearings/journals?
|
Picture it this way:
Have you ever let a heavy piece of wood (like a 4X8') fall onto the ground? Did you ever have one that seemed to get cushioned by air just before it hit the ground? That equates to a bearing surface that is true. The same piece of wood hitting the ground at an angle is what an out of true journal is like as it relates to the connecting rod journal/bearing hitting the crank... |
if things are a little out of round and/or tapered after they have been knocking around for a while you'll be able to see just what the effects are. To see the damage you won't need any tools to get the rods out of the block - they'll probably do it all by themselves.
Pat - I liked the way you put it. Easy to visualise. regards |
The desired oil wedge that is created by pump between the bearing surface (flat) and the irregular journal becomes inconsistant allowing the bearing to contact the journal surface at which time metal transfer takes place (a no-no) and you begin counting the money in your wallet again.
